Configuring the Cash Drawer

There are times when you are using the program and certain peripherals aren't operating correctly. One main peripheral is the "Cash Drawer." There could be a few reasons why this isn't working properly. To test the configuration, you can use these few steps.

First determine if the cash drawer is intelligent or non-intelligent. An Intelligent drawer will be interfaced with a printer via a small telephone- like wire. The non-intelligent drawer will be connected directly to a serial or com port.

Next, check at the DOS prompt which port the drawer is using. To do this, type one of the following commands:

If it is intelligent use the command: "ECHO^G>LPT1" <enter>

If it is non-intelligent you will use the command: "DIR>COM1" <enter>

If the drawer is operating properly it will pop open with one of these commands, unless it is on a different port, in which case you will use LPT2 or COM2.

After you have found the correct port go into the program and set it up in " Customize section," under "Hardware settings." The system will ask you about your hardware devices.

"Activate Cash Drawer" option, type "Y."

"Change Drawer Parameters" type "Y."

Next enter in the specific parameters for the type of cash drawer you are using.

If the drawer is intelligent the system is defaulted to LPT1 and the CHR (character string) is defaulted to 7.

If the cash drawer is not opening during a transaction, add an additional character string to the original such as CHR(7) or CHR(13) in the following format: CHR(7)+CHR(13).

If the drawer is non-intelligent the parameters are different.

Enter the "Port, Baud rate, Pulse width and Number of times." You must also enter a mode command into your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Depending on the DOS version you are using, you will have to use the correct editor.

The additional line will read as follows: "MODE COM1:96,n,8,1". If the drawer doesn't open during a transaction, go to hardware settings and adjust the pulse width and the number of times to 30 each. This will increase the signal and the cash drawer will open.

Test opening the cash drawer at the work screen. Ring a transaction by pressing F9. If the drawer does not open, change the parameters in customize.

NOTE: If any devices or peripherals don't work at the DOS prompt, it could be a problem with that device. If this occurs, contact the manufacturer of that device.
