Using the AM5000 Portable Data Collector with MicroBiz
Loading the AM5000 Software
- Put the disk labeled M5000 Utilities in your computer’s floppy disk drive.
- Click on the start button on your computer, then click on Run. In the space that says Open, type a:\setup and press <enter>.
- You will be brought into the setup wizard for the program. Click next at the first three screens, then click finish.
Coordinating the COM Port Settings
- Right click on My Computer. Select Properties and left click on it. This will bring you to the System Properties.
- Click on the Device Manager tab, then click on the “+” sign next to ports (COM & LPT).
- You will eventually be connecting the AM5000 to one of these COM ports in order to transfer the inventory data into MicroBiz. Highlight the COM port you will be using by clicking on it, then click on the properties button. Click on port settings.
- Click on your start button in the lower left corner of Windows, then click on programs, then M5000 utilities, then M5000 programmer.
- Click on communications, then setup. Make certain that the baud rate, data bits, stop bits, parity, and flow control all match what is in your port settings in step #6, above. Click OK and close the M5000 programmer and the port settings windows.
Loading Program P2C
- Turn on the AM5000 by pressing the red PWR button. You will be in the Main Menu screen.
- Press I for Input. The screen will read No Programs Exist. Copy Built In Program? (Yes).
- Press <enter>. This will bring up a list of programs.
- Scroll down to P2C using the arrows on the keypad. Press <enter>.
- The Machine will read Copying P2C to RAM, then P2C Copied to RAM. Press Any Key.
- When you press any key, you will be back at the Main Menu screen.
Inputting Inventory
- Press I for input. This brings you to the Select Program screen. P2C will be present, with an arrow next to it. Press <enter>.
- You will be on the Input File screen. Select *New File* and press <enter>.
- The AM5000 will prompt you to enter a name. Type a name in and press <enter>
- The Screen will prompt you for P/N and QTY. Scan the barcode, enter the quantity in stock, and press <enter>.
- When you finish entering in products, press the exit key on the keypad. The screen will say Exit Data Entry. Are You Sure? (No). Use the arrow keys to switch the No to Yes and press <enter>
- You will be asked, Save DataFile? (Yes). Press <enter>. Then press the exit key until you are back at the Main Menu screen.
Transferring Data from the AM5000 to the Computer
- Connect the AM5000 to the computer by plugging the RJ45 end (it looks like a telephone jack) into the AM5000, and plugging the serial end (with 9 holes) into the computer.
- In Windows, click on the start button, then click on programs, then M5000 utilities, then M5000 programmer. Click on communications, then receive file.
- You will be prompted for a name for the file. Enter a name and click on save. Then click on receive. The screen status will say waiting.
- Power on the AM5000. From the Main Menu, type C (for Communications).
- At the Communication Select window, choose Send and press <enter>.
- From the Send Select window, choose Data Files and press <enter>.
- At the Upload Selection screen, choose Program P2C and press <enter>
- From the Upload P2C window, choose the Data File that you created and named earlier, and press <enter>
- At the Communication Mode screen, select RS232 Serial. The screen will read Waiting For Connect.
- Once the transfer begins, the screen will read Sending , and it will display what percentage of the file has been sent. When it is finished, it will say Transmit Complete Press Any Key.
- Press Any Key on the AM5000. You will be asked, Erase Uploaded Data Files? (No). Whether or not you delete the file(s) is up to you. You should delete files, to make room on the data collector for future data, but you may want to wait until you are certain the file transferred properly first.
- You will be back at the Send Select screen. Press the exit key until you are back at the Main Menu screen. Now you can power down the AM5000 and disconnect it from the computer.
- In the M5000 Programmer window, click on exit, then close the program.
Loading the Data into MicoBiz
- In MicroBiz, go to tools, then MicroTrak, then Import Data.
- You have the choice to either add to existing on hand quantity or replace existing on hand quantity. Choose the one you want, then click import.
- You will be at an open window. Use the drop-down menu next to look in to select your (C) drive, then click on Program Files, then American Microsystems Ltd, then M5000 utilities.
- Use the drop-down menu next to files of type and select all files (*.*) by clicking on it. Find the file you created and named in the window above. Click on it, then click the import button.
- A window will appear telling you how many records were retrieved. Click OK.
- The next window tells you Ready to update inventory. Would you like to see an exceptions report? Choosing yes will not update your inventory yet; it will just let you see the differences in inventory. After you print the report, you will have the option of updating your inventory.

In the future, you can skip steps 1 through 14. They are only needed for the original setup.
