PHL-1600 "Hummer"- Demo Program Instructions

"Hummer"

Demo Program Instructions

The PHL-1600 is supplied with a demonstration program installed. It allows acquiring data by scanning a bar code or entering data from the keyboard. This data can be stored for subsequent transmission to a host computer in "batch" mode, or can be instantly transmitted in "real time," depending upon the user selected option.

Transmission to the host computer can occur in one of two ways: via the RS232C port on the bottom of the PHL-1600 using the optional RS232 cable, or the infrared port above the screen using the optional IR adapter. This option is also selectable by the user. In either case, the transmission rate is 9600 baud. It is determined by the program and is not alterable.

1.0 Setting Options

1.1 Depress the orange-colored power key (PW). The screen will display the following:

MAIN MENU

1: ENTER DATA

2: UPLOAD FILE

3: OPTIONS

1.2 Select OPTIONS by depressing the "3" key. The following screen will appear:*

OPTIONS

1: BATCH SETUP

2: COM SETUP

Opticon PA1U02

* At any time, the unit may be returned to the MAIN MENU screen by depressing the F1 key.

1.3 To select "batch" vs "real time," depress the "1" key. The following screen will appear:

BATCH SETUP

1: BATCH

2: REAL TIME

1.4 Depressing the "1" key will sound a beep tone and place the PHL-1600 in the batch mode. The OPTIONS screen will be displayed again. All acquired data will be stored in memory and will remain there, even if power is turned off, until the PHL-1600 is directed to UPLOAD the file.

NOTE: Upon execution of the UPLOAD command, all data will be erased from memory.

1.5 Depressing the "2" key will sound a beep tone and place the PHL-1600 in the real time mode. The OPTIONS screen will be displayed again. Upon acceptance** of the data acquired while in the DATA ENTRY screen, the data will be instantly uploaded. No data is stored.

**Acceptance is initiated by depressing the ENT key after entering a QUANTITY.

1.6 To select the communication mode, depress the "2" key while in the OPTIONS screen. Select "1" (RS-232C) or "2" (IR PORT) as desired. Selecting RS-232C will enable communications via the RS232C cable. Selecting IR PORT will enable communications via the IR port.

1.7 Depress the "F1" key to return to the main menu.

2.0 Setting the Host (PC) communications parameters

Use either Terminal (Windows 3.1) or the Hyper Terminal program (Windows 95) to set the PC to communicate with the PHL-1600.

2.1 Windows 3.1

Access Terminal via the Accessories group of programs. Double click on Terminal, select Settings from the menu bar and then Communications from the drop-down menu. In the Communications dialog box, select the COM port and then all the other parameters to set the following:

9600 baud rate, No parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit.

Make sure Flow Control is set to None. Click OK. The computer is now set to receive data and the PHL-1600 data, when transmitted by any method, will appear in the computer's Terminal screen text area.

2.2 Windows 95

Open Hyper Terminal (via START - Programs - Accessories). Select Hypertrm.exe to create a New Connection. In the Connection Description dialog box enter any name for the new file. (If desired, select an icon.) Click OK. In the Phone Number dialog box and in the box entitled "Connect using ..." select the COM port you will be using, for example, "Direct to COM1". Click OK. In the COM1 properties dialog box, enter the settings above. Make sure Handshaking is set to NONE. Click OK.

The hyper terminal folder just created will open. Select File from the menu bar and then Properties from the drop-down menu. Select Settings from the index tabs at the top of the dialogue box and then select ASCII settings from within the Settings dialogue box. In the ASCII dialogue box, click on all empty check boxes except the "Force incoming data to 7-bit ASCII." Click OK, then OK again to return to the hyper terminal folder just created. Data transmitted to the computer by any method from the PHL-1600 will now show in the text area.

3.0 Entering Data

3.1 From the MAIN MENU screen, depress the "1" key. The following screen will appear:

DATA ENTRY

PRODUCT CODE

[ ]

QUANTITY [ ]

3.2 Use the large oblong laser trigger key just beneath the display to activate the laser scanner. Scanning a bar code will put the bar coded data into the second line just below the highlighted PRODUCT CODE line and then will highlight QUANTITY.

3.3 Enter any desired number from the keyboard. It will appear between the brackets on the QUANTITY line.

3.4 Depressing the ENT key will either store the data or transmit it through the selected port, depending on the options previously selected. The data is cleared from the DATA ENTRY screen and the PHL-1600 is ready to acquire new data.

If REAL TIME was chosen, the data will appear on the PC's screen if the RS232 cable is connected to the PHL-1600 and the PC, or the IR adapter is connected to the PC and the PHL-1600 is "aimed" at the adapter.

If BATCH was chosen, the data will be stored in memory.

4.0 UPLOADING

NOTE: Make sure that the selected communication path (RS232 or IR) is established before proceeding.

4.1 From the MAIN MENU screen, depress the "2" key. This will instantly upload any data in memory and then erase it. Subsequent depression of the "2" key will display a message indicating the absence of data.

5.0 Other functions

Not shown on the MAIN MENU screen but available to the user are two additional functions. They are SCAN TEST and COM TEST.

5.1 SCAN TEST

From the MAIN MENU screen, depress the "4" key. The following screen will appear:

SCAN TEST

Use the oblong key to activate the laser scanner and scan a bar code. The data will show on the screen as shown below. Data will scroll off the bottom of the screen as more bar codes are scanned.

Depress the F1 key to return to the MAIN MENU when finished with this function.

SCAN TEST

0352661784541

0462158956241

5.2 COM TEST

From the MAIN MENU screen, depress the "5" key. The following screen will appear:

COM TEST

From PC: { }

To PC: { }

Using either transmission mode, RS232C or IR, depression of any key on the PC's keyboard will produce that key's symbol in the brackets after "From PC:" and on the PC. Similarly, depressing any key on the PHL-1600's keyboard will produce that key's (numeric) symbol between the brackets after "To PC:" and on the PC's screen.

The COM TEST function can be used to determine if the communication link between the PHL-1600 and the PC is operative.

Depress the F1 key to return to the MAIN MENU when finished with this function.
