Windows Products Updates

Step 0: Make a Backup of the BUSINESS folder on your server, which contains your data. You may also want to back up the BIZWIN folders on your workstations, where your settings are stored. Backups are important because computers crash at inopportune times.

Step 1: go to www.microbiz.com. Click on Update & Download. Click on Windows Downloads and Updates. Click on Business Controller version 9.0. Or just click here to open the link in a new window.

Step 2: Enter your customer number and serial number for verification, and click Login.

Step 3: It should say Enabled. Click on Download Now. If it says your serial number has expired, or is invalid, call 800-929-8324 for Tech Support.

Step 4: Wait a few moments, and answer Yes when the InstallShield plug-in tries to install itself (you need Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher, and your security settings need to allow for ActiveX controls).

Step 5: Once the plug-in is installed, click on the Blue InstallShield Button.

Step 6: A screen will come up – It is recommended to choose the third option "Download Only". This is a large download; read the instructions on the screen carefully and choose your download option. Download only is the safest option, and the rest of these instructions assume that Download Only was chosen.

Step 7: You will come to a Setup Files Location screen. You can put the approximately 50 files anywhere you want. By default they will go to c:\program files\setup files\MicroBiz Controller Series. If you put in "c:\microbiz" it will create a folder called “microbiz” on your c: drive and put the setup files there. Do not put the files in Business, BizWin, desktop, or anywhere else important files may reside. Click Install and then click yes to create the folder.

Step 8: Wait. The download is over 20 MB, and will take a while (1-2 hours) on a 56K dial-up modem connection. Once it is done you will have your setup files in the location chosen in Step 7...We'll call this the "MicroBiz setup" folder.

Step 9: To run the installation, double-click SETUP.EXE in the "MicroBiz setup" folder. If it is a single user system, choose "Full Install". If you have a multi-user system, choose "Full Install" for the Server (the computer with the BUSINESS folder), and "Workstation Install" for each workstation. You can run the installation from another computer by tunneling through the network, or if that is too confusing, go to step 10.

Step 10: Burn a CD with the contents of the "microbiz setup" folder. All CD-Burning software is slightly different, but the basic idea is to copy the "MicroBiz setup" folder to the CD-R drive. If you have Windows XP, you can drag and drop the folder to your CD-R drive.

Step 11: Once you have the files on the CD, you can load the CD on a computer, go into the CD drive in My Computer, and execute the "SETUP.EXE" file which will install the program. The SETUP.EXE will either be on the CD root, or in the "MicroBiz setup" folder, depending on how the CD was made.

Note: For first-time multi-user installations, the workstations must have a drive mapped to the server. For example: If the BUSINESS folder is on the server's C: drive, you would need to map a drive from the workstation to the server's C: drive. This can be done by finding the server's C: drive in Network Neighborhood, right-clicking on it, and choosing "Map Network Drive". The workstation will assign a letter to the mapped drive, we'll call it the G: drive, but it could be any other letter. At that point G: on your workstation will represent C: on the server. In MicroBiz, under customize | Windows Settings, the system files path needs to be G:\BUSINESS on the workstation(s), and C:\BUSINESS on the server. The local files path should be C:\BIZWIN on all computers. You can also assign the paths from outside the program by running INITPATH.EXE from your C:\BIZWIN folder. If you require further assistance, call Technical Support at 800-929-8324.
