Using Serial Cash Drawers in Video 2000 and Dry Cleaner 2000 for DOS on a Windows NT Workstation

For MicroBiz Video 2000 and Dry Cleaner 2000, you can use a serial cash drawer on a Windows NT Workstation. You need to use the DOS MODE command to set up the COM port for your cash drawer. Then you need to use the MODE command to route an available LPT port to the COM port your cash drawer is connected to. If you have printers on LPT1 and/or LPT2, you can route LPT3, LPT4, etc. to the COM port even if you physically don’t have those printer ports. Please note that serial cash drawers operate normally in Auto 2000 and Business Controller for DOS Version 9, and this tech note is not required for those two DOS programs.

All of these MODE commands should be added to the VIDEO.BAT or CLEANER.BAT batch file in your \VIDEO or \CLEANER directory.

An example of a modified VIDEO.BAT file for an NT Workstation using an MMF serial cash drawer on COM1 looks like this (comments in parentheses (in red) should not go in the actual batch file text):

MODE COM1:24,n,8,1       (These are the default settings for an MMF)

MODE LPT5:=COM1          (This command routes LPT5 to COM1)

The only lines added to the original batch file are the 2 MODE commands.

At this point, enter the MicroBiz Video 2000 or Dry Cleaner 2000, and go to customize | Hardware Settings (It is called “Other Settings” for Video 2000 and “Hardware Settings” for Dry Cleaner 2000). Enter “Y” for “Activate Cash Drawer” and then choose “Y” for “Change Cash Drawer Parameters.” Select “Intelligent” by entering “I” as the type, then enter LPT5 or whatever LPT port you routed to the COM port as the parallel port. Enter “ZZZZZZZZ” (that is 8 Z’s and you must put them in double quotes) as the character string to send. On the next question, enter “Y” if you want your clerks to be able to type “C” at the work screen to open the cash drawer. Finally, answer “Y” to the “Test Open Now” question. The cash drawer should open when you hit .
